Hi FEATool team,
<br/><br/>I am wondering if a loop reactor (i.e. a reactor which connects the outlet to its inlet by pump) can be set up in FEATool? I checked the boundary condition and built-in examples, but I cannot find such feature.
<br/><br/>Thanks!

Hi James,
<br/><br/>Due to how the finite element method works, implementing such algebraic constraints only naturally comes in in the form of integral constraints (<a href="https://featool.com/doc/physics#eqn_bdr_int_constr" target="_top" rel="nofollow" link="external">https://featool.com/doc/physics#eqn_bdr_int_constr</a>), that is the constraint is only applied in a integral sense (for any specific point it might not apply, as such pointwise constraints would be difficult to implement).

The easiest way is to first start the FEATool toolbox GUI, and then leave it open in the background.
<br/><br/>Alternatively, you can manually add the searchpaths to the running Matlab instance.
<br/><br/><pre>
addpath(genpath('path_to_toolbox_folder'))
</pre><br/>where "path_to_toolbox_folder" is the <b>App Path:</b> shown when you select "System Info..." from the "Help" menu in the toolbox GUI. If you want to make this permanent, you can use the <a href="https://www.mathworks.com/help/matlab/ref/savepath.html" target="_top" rel="nofollow" link="external">savepath</a> command.

Greetings,
<br/><br/>I saved a model I made in FEATool as a matlab file, I wanted to open it in matlab to see if I could code some things manually, to see total deformation etc. I was unable to run the script because it didn't understand these functions that were being referenced, like addphys, or any of them.
<br/><br/>What to do here?

Hi FEATool team,
<br/><br/>Supposing I have a compound A (initial concentration CA0), which has two complexes AB, AC after reactions, can FEATool keep the material balance for A (i.e. C(A) + C(AB) + C(AC) = constant CA0) with time and space? Which FEATool version can do it and could you provide a simple example?

Just to update on this issue, the problem has been identified as due to incorrect unit scaling of the base coordinates for rotation. The issue has been fixed in release v1.16.5.
<br/><br/>For earlier releases, a workaround is to redo the scaling and multiplying all rotational base coordinates with 1000 (unfortunately all rotated objects must be reverted to their unrotated state as their rotated position is incorrect internally).

Thank you very much for the troubleshooting, and detailed explanation of the issue. We will try to have a fix with the next release due in a few months or so (most likely a "proper" fix will require modifying the internals of the geometry engine so a quick patch probably won't be possible).
<br/><br/>In the meantime I guess a workaround could be to export the geometry as a STEP file, and perform the problematic operations in a dedicated CAD software such as Fusion360, OnShape, or maybe FreeCAD (although FreeCAD and FEATool shares the same OpenCASCADE geometry kernel, their implementation is likely different and maybe does not exhibit this issue).
<br/><br/>Thanks again for reporting, and I will update this thread when a fix has been found and released. Feel free to submit more issues if you encounter any.

I've deduced that under combination, the axis pass-through point is switched to the origin. This makes no difference in some specific cases, of course, e.g., all axes defined by vector (0,0,1) and points of the form (0,0,z) are identical. In general, however, the current solution seems to be computing/manually correcting the resulting 3D displacements. This is problematic if there are many objects an/or configurations, as there are in this case: 32 leaves, each with a different rotation about a different horizontal axis, and multiple sets of those rotations to test.
<br/><br/>The basic case is linked below. The problem can be duplicated by making a rotated copy of CS2 about the axis defined by vector (0,1,0) and point (0,-0.6069,1.02) -- a point on the top, inner edge of the 'leaf' -- by -pi/2 and then combining as B1-CS1-CS2-CS3. The position of the rotated copy in the combined domain will be as if the rotation was done about the axis defined by vector (0,1,0) about point (0,0,0).
<br/><br/><a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/1pdJXExOb1hXCPfdUmpBu2xcqgNhbkof-/view?usp=drive_link" target="_top" rel="nofollow" link="external">https://drive.google.com/file/d/1pdJXExOb1hXCPfdUmpBu2xcqgNhbkof-/view?usp=drive_link</a><br/><br/>Incidentally, rotating without copying does not work for me. It appears to do some rotation, but very slight relative to the amount specified. Not a big deal to delete originals before combining, but something to note.

Hi, thank you for submitting the issue. It could be an internal error in the geometry engine (possibly a geometry object internally has the wrong center coordinates). If possible, could you attach or upload it to some shared hosting (for example google drive, wetransfer) the original model (from step 1) so we can reproduce the issue?

I'm having trouble combining object copies rotated about horizontal axes. In the following geometry a copy of a 'leaf' (CS2) is being made under a rotation about a vertical axis passing through the origin.
<br/><img src="http://forum.featool.com/file/n1613/orig_leaves_test.png" border="0"/><br/><br/>After copying, a rotated copy (of CS4) is attempted about a horizontal axis at the upper edge of the leaf:
<br/><img src="http://forum.featool.com/file/n1613/leaves_with_1st_rotcopy.png" border="0"/><br/><br/>All looks good so far:
<br/><img src="http://forum.featool.com/file/n1613/Capture3.png" border="0"/><br/><br/>Now we attempt to combine objects after deleting CS4:
<br/><img src="http://forum.featool.com/file/n1613/Capture4.png" border="0"/><br/><br/>The combined geometry places the CS5 copy in an entirely new position, as if translated upward and toward the z-axis (rotation looks unchanged.) Note that the initial copy operation isn't the issue: the same thing will happen for a translated copy or a brand new object. Analogous behavior isn't noted when combining copies (objects like CS4) made with a rotation about the z-axis.
<br/><img src="http://forum.featool.com/file/n1613/Capture_final.png" border="0"/><br/><br/>Any help would be appreciated.

Compatibility issues like this are often due to the c library "libc". Unfortunately, as almost everything is compiled and linked against it, it usually can't be updated by itself, only by updating the Linux distribution/version.
<br/><br/>I think Mumps in general is only about 5-10% faster than the built-in solver Umfpack (backslash), so it might not be worth going through the trouble of updating your whole system unless you really need all performance.

Hi,
<br/><br/>The issue seems to be that the Mumps linear solver mex (Matlab extension) file has crashed. These files are compiled and can sometimes causes crashes if for some reason they are not compatible with the system (possibly your Debian version is older than the system it was built for Ubuntu 20.04 I think).
<br/><br/>If you open the "Solver Settings" dialog box and change the default "Linear solver" setting from "mumps" to "backslash" (the built-in in Matlab solver) it will probably work for your models. It might still crash for the automated tutorials if they select mumps anyway, in this case you can go to the folder and rename (or delete) the problematic mex file (in this case "/home/sasza/.mcrCache9.14/FEAToo0/FEATool_Mult/build/featool_pkg/app/lib/mumps/dmumpsmex_st.mexa64"). In case other mex files also have issues (such as fsparse) you can try to rename and delete them as well.

Thank you for attaching a model file. With the default settings, the stationary solver does not converge likely due to the nonlinear radiative term ~T^4, so the solution can not be expected to be correct.
<br/><br/>One can try to tune the solver setting by decreasing the nonlinear relaxation parameter and increasing the number of iterations. Or slowly increasing the nonlinear term and using the previously computed solution as initial guess. Also please check if all you boundary coefficients are correct, as some have the coefficient 5E-8 and others 1.5E-8.

Thank you for confirming that updating to the current version helped with CSV export.
<br/><br/>The CSV export functionality evaluates and exports selected data in grid point by default, the field [fea.grid.p] so the CSV data should have the column length "size(fea.grid.p,2)" if you did not change the export coordinates. The data evaluation itself is just the code
<br/><br/><pre>
n_p = size(xp,2);
n_sdim = size(xp,1);
n_expr = length(expr);
data = [xp.', zeros(n_p, n_expr)];
for i=1:n_expr
data(:,n_sdim + i) = evalexpr( expr{i}, xp, fea, solnum );
end
</pre><br/>where "expr" is a cell array of the expressions to evaluate, for example "{'u', 'v', 'w', 'p'}".

Dear FEATool support team,
<br/><br/>Wishing you all the best for the new year.
<br/><br/>I appreciate that. This issue was resolved by reinstalling the latest version of featool. Although I wrote a Matlab program from fea (the data comes from my simulation) to get data in csv format, the values are different compared to data obtained directly in Featool CSV format.
<br/>On the other hand, some problems have arisen with the fea data. The number of fea.sol.u is 122217 divided by 5 and comes from fea.dvar, including {u,v,w,p,lm1_p} is not an integer.
<br/>The same applies to the number of nodes, which is 30554 and divided by 4 (the number that comes from c[4×126690 nodes x elements]) is not an integer.
<br/>In my programs I have to neglect two final values of fea.sol.u and fea.grid.p (solutions and nodes) to get the integer values.
<br/>I'm wondering if this method makes sense and if it is the reason for the difference value between my program's csv data and the data obtained directly from featool.
<br/><br/>The last problem is the discrepancy between 4x126690=506760 and the number of nodes, which is 30554. I would be grateful if you could help me solve it.
<br/><br/>Best Regards,
<br/>Zahra

Thank you for trying the software. Unfortunately OpenFOAM is quite difficult to get running properly on Mac, we hope to be able provide better instructions at a later date, when the ARM port is done. In the mean time it would be recommended to use a Linux VM or try following the official instructions from the official OpenFOAM developers.

I have a fairly simple heat transfer model, in 3D. When I model it with time dependence it seems to provide a reasonable-looking solution. However, if I model it as stationary it won't solve. Postprocessing plot shows the one surface I input at fixed temperature, and the rest of the volume shows no temperature solution (just transparent).
<br/>I don't need a time-dependent solution. I have a feeling it is something to do with the boundary conditions. Any ideas?

<br/><br/>'For MacOS systems OpenFOAM needs to be compiled from source and installed in the folder /opt/openfoam'
<br/><br/>means. I'm also not into system programming that much, thus a step by step installation with terminal on Mac
<br/>would be really nice. :D

Hi Zahra,
<br/><br/>I see, as email also isn't suitable for large file shares, could you perhaps try to share the file through a online file sharing service, such as:

Dear FEATool support team,
<br/><br/>Due to the file size I couldn't send it. I would appreciate it if you could send me your email address or help me in this regard.
<br/><br/>All the best,
<br/>Zahra

Fixes for CSV and Excel export were made in version 1.16.4, can you confirm that you are running this version. If so please attach your model file and the expressions you are trying to export so we can try to reproduce the issue.

Dear FEATool support team,
<br/><br/>To export data in csv format from the post and export result paths in FEATool,
<br/>I'm getting an "Export Failed" error and haven't been able to resolve this issue.
<br/><br/>Could you please give me some guidance or guidance on how to successfully export data in csv format from FEATool?
<br/><br/>Regards,
<br/>Zahra

You can currently not use external solvers (OpenFOAM, FEniCS, SU2) together (at the same time) with the built-in multiphysics solver. However, you can use the solution from one solver as input to another, for example using the flow field computed by OpenFOAM with the built-in heat transfer physics mode as shown in the multi-simulation example:

Hi. I need your help. I want to perform a convection-diffusion analysis combined with a turbulent flow analysis using OpenFoam built in FEA Multitool physics. I can combine a convection-diffusion analysis with a laminar flow analysis. When I tried to run a convection-diffusion analysis combined with a turbulent flow analysis, I see the error below. Is there any mean to combine a convection-diffusion analysis with turbulent flow analysis using FEA Multitool Physics? I think if flow vectors can be calculated, it is possible to combine it with convection-diffusion analysis.
<br/><br/>Error Message: openfoam: only support for a single Navier-Stokes, non-Newtonian flow or Compressible Euler physics mode.
